A powerful weekend of screenings and discussions explores how filmmakers have depicted humanity’s response to genocide.

On Saturday, The Long Way Home, the Academy Award–winning documentary about the Holocaust of European Jews, will be paired with The Killing Fields, the Oscar-winning feature film about the Cambodian genocide. The Sunday screenings will feature the prize-winning documentary Darfur Now and the acclaimed dramatic feature Hotel Rwanda, recounting the continuing atrocities in Darfur and the mass murders in Rwanda, respectively.
In between the screenings, discussions with the filmmakers will focus on the challenges storytellers face when they confront horrors of this magnitude. Panelists will include Terry George, director of Hotel Rwanda; Ted Braun, director of Darfur Now; and Mark Jonathan Harris, director of The Long Way Home.

Winner of numerous awards, including the 2007 NAACP Image Award for Best Documentary, Darfur Now brings to light the tragedy in Sudan. The film portrays the struggles and achievements of six very different individuals from Darfur and around the world, including a UCLA graduate, a Darfurian woman who joins rebel forces, a prosecutor of the international criminal court in the Hague, a United Nations humanitarian in Sudan, an internationally known actor and activist, and a community leader in a West Darfur refugee camp. A panel discussion and reception will follow.
